What's howling all about?
This is the 5AM video of our "Hotel Canine". This is the last video of this year's street dog study. It is also the first video of this group, after the departure of Kajal. Compare it to the earlier videos. The hotel has emptied. All her suitors are gone!
The night after I took Kajal, there was incessant howling. Was it just a coincidence or did the howling have something to do with Kajal's absence.
If you do a bit of research into why dogs or wolves howl, you'll see that it has to do with long distance communication. Further more, one journal says "Vocalizations may be driven by emotions and the physiological state evoked by changes in the social-ecological environment". It seems commonly agreed upon that howling is a response to group fragmentation. However, this study goes on to suggest that there are variations in this howling that indicate the quality of the relationship between the howler and the individual who left. That's fascinating. So, were Handa and Ken expressing their love for Kajal.
I was just wondering, if I recorded it and played it out when Kajal returned, would she know who her true lover is? Will the boys return? Will their dynamic change and if so how? I have seen platonic friendships before. Will this turn into one of them?
Well, for now the study needs to stop and Kajal is in the able care of Debbie from precious paws. I am heading to UK in a few days and am taking a break after. I will return Kajal to her group before Diwali and then I am taking off again. After Diwali, I promise to go visit again and see what's happening and report back from Hotel Canine.
Also, if you'd like to donate to PPF for Kajal's procedure and post of care, Debbie has a paypal page. Click here to donate.
